We are seeking a TECHNICAL DESIGNER to join the Orvis Team! Remote Northern New England and surrounding area candidates will be considered. It is our expectation that you live within a reasonable driving distance from Kittery, ME where regular fit sessions are held at the Orvis Store in Kittery, ME. You will also travel to Southern Vermont 2-3 times per year for our Design Development Review cadence.    

 

As a Technical Designer, you play a pivotal role in leading our apparel transformation. Your role is vital to contributing the corporate goal of driving the flawless execution of our Men’s apparel products ensuring fit and construction excellence. As a member of the Technical Design team, you will be responsible for celebrating our authenticity and heritage by inspiring our customers with exceptional fitting, high quality, elevated products. 

 

Working directly with the Design, Product Development/Sourcing, Merchandising, and Technical Design Teams, the Technical Designer position requires a working knowledge of fit, patterning, grading, and garment construction. The candidate will be generating technical specification packages for garment development and manufacturing in overseas factories. Working in a fast-paced environment, the candidate must be self-motivated, highly organized and able to present information written and verbally in a clear and concise manner. They must be collaborative and open-minded to new ideas while maintaining focus on timelines and calendar due dates.

Position Interfaces: 

This position reports directly to the Senior Manager of Technical Design and has no direct reports. Position interfaces on a daily or routine basis with Designers, Product Developers, External Vendors, other Technical Designers, Sample Room Coordinator, and Quality Assurance. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Partner with Product Design & Development to create technical design packages which include Adobe Illustrator sketches, stitching details, measurement specifications, and grading. 
  • Manage end- to- end fit development process and calendar timeline readying styles for commercialization and bulk production. Own daily communication with factories on all fit sample status and ensure fit approval deadlines are met. 
  • Ensure that the garments produced meet the strictest of quality requirements and that all general specifications, fit blocks, and comments are met. 
  • Orchestrate fit review; evaluate garment fit on live model and dress forms; write-up fit corrections, styling changes, and measurement requirements ensuring tech pack is correct in all technical design areas. 
  • Develop and maintain fit standards utilizing block libraries across assigned product categories. 
  • Development and maintenance block library for relevant product categories. 
  • Recognize and correct issues associated with returning goods to identify whether the problem is fit, fabric, cut, trim, quality, sizing, etc. 
  • Collaborate with technical design team on development and maintenance of POM and How to Measure Library. 
  • General filing and department administrative tasks including maintaining tracking documents. 

 

Competencies and Requirements:   

  • Strong knowledge of garment fit and construction for knit and woven tops, mid-layers, and sweaters for men’s apparel. 
  • 5+ years minimum industry experience with experience in CAD computer patternmaking software (example: Optitex, Gerber, or similar) 
  • Detail oriented, organized with a high level of verbal and written communication skills. 
  • High degree of judgement and independent thinking. 
  • Proven track record of working as a supportive team member. 
  • Ability to help strengthen the total team efforts through team contributions and team building characteristics. 
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills. 
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs and Adobe Illustrator 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • Passion for outdoor activities and a deep understanding of the outdoor industry, its trends, and customer preferences.
